How Can the WTO be Mor e Effective in Resolving International Agricultural Trade Disputes

Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of the WTO dispute settlement mechanism in agricultural trade. Through three case studies, it is found that some agricultural legal rules under the current rules are vague, the dispute resolution process is lengthy, and the participation of developing countries is limited. The study confirms three hypotheses and partially supports the fourth, suggesting the need for reform. The study recommends clarifying legal terminology, strengthening support for developing countries, and institutionalizing mediation. These recommendations are intended to enhance the effectiveness and authority of WTO dispute settlement.
